About “Towers of the Virgin Sunrise”
The Image
"Towers of the Virgin Sunrise" captures a compelling scene from Zion. The Towers of the Virgin are a collection of sandstone peaks on the west side of Zion Canyon, visible from the park's main road near the entrance. At sunrise, the first direct sunlight hits the top of the towers while the valley floor and foreground are still entirely in shadow — the contrast ratio is extreme, far beyond what most film stocks and digital sensors can hold cleanly. Kodak Ektar 100 color negative film was chosen specifically for its dynamic range. Negative film, especially in the shadows, handles high-contrast scenes differently from slide film — it compresses the highlights rather than clipping them, and holds shadow detail where transparency film goes black. That range was necessary here. Shot with the Arca-Swiss 4x5 on Kodak Ektar 100 at sunrise in fall. Available as a limited edition fine art print on ImageTech Photo Gloss paper, ChromaLuxe aluminum, or Lumachrome HD TruLife Acrylic in sizes from 11x14 to 40x50. Numbered with certificate of authenticity.
Technical Approach
This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera loaded with Kodak Ektar 100. Shot during sunrise, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Autumn color transformed the landscape, adding warmth and visual richness to the natural scene. Ektar's ultra-fine grain and accurate color rendition produce images with remarkable clarity and natural saturation. The large film area records extraordinary detail, producing prints that remain sharp at virtually any size. Camera movements allow precise control over perspective and depth of field impossible with smaller formats. The first sun rays of the morning hitting the Towers of the Virgins in Zion National Park. Captured on an Arca-Swiss 4x5 camera using Kodak Ektar 100 color negative film. This film was used because of the huge dynamic range it is able to capture. The bright sky and dark foreground has far too much contrast for most film and digital sensors.
Location & Subject
Utah's landscape represents millions of years of geological artistry. The state contains more national parks than almost any other, each showcasing distinct formations—from Zion's towering sandstone cliffs to Bryce Canyon's delicate hoodoos, from Arches' natural stone bridges to Capitol Reef's colorful waterpocket fold. The interplay of light on red rock creates conditions that reward patient photographers with extraordinary images. Desert landscapes reward photographers who understand the extremes of this environment. The absence of atmospheric moisture creates exceptional clarity and vibrant color saturation, particularly during golden hour. Heat creates convection currents requiring careful timing, while dramatic temperature swings between day and night generate unique weather patterns. Desert subjects—from weathered joshua trees to abstract dune formations—benefit from the clean, directional light these environments provide.
