Factory Butte before sunrise in the Utah badlands, the mesa's silhouette rising from flat terrain as predawn light begins to define the sky. Panoramic, Fujifilm GFX100S, fall.

Predawn at Factory Butte means being in position in the dark — the mesa is a silhouette against a sky that's just beginning to lighten, and the flat terrain in every direction gives no visual anchor except the butte itself. As the sky shifts from black to deep blue to the first suggestion of gray, the mesa's layered geology becomes visible. The panoramic format suits this: the butte and the surrounding badlands need horizontal room, and the sky is secondary to the landform. Shot on the Fujifilm GFX100S before sunrise in fall. The panoramic crop emphasizes the horizontal character of the terrain. Available on ImageTech Photo Gloss paper, ChromaLuxe aluminum metal prints, and Lumachrome HD TruLife acrylic. Panoramic sizes available. Limited edition, numbered, with certificate of authenticity.

About “Dawn’s Embrace

The Image

"Dawn’s Embrace" presents a distinctive perspective on Utah's remarkable red rock country. Technical Approach

This photograph was captured using a Medium Format Digital camera. Shot during sunrise, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Autumn color transformed the landscape, adding warmth and visual richness to the natural scene.

Location & Subject

Utah's landscape represents millions of years of geological artistry. The state contains more national parks than almost any other, each showcasing distinct formations—from Zion's towering sandstone cliffs to Bryce Canyon's delicate hoodoos, from Arches' natural stone bridges to Capitol Reef's colorful waterpocket fold. The interplay of light on red rock creates conditions that reward patient photographers with extraordinary images. Desert landscapes reward photographers who understand the extremes of this environment. The absence of atmospheric moisture creates exceptional clarity and vibrant color saturation, particularly during golden hour. Heat creates convection currents requiring careful timing, while dramatic temperature swings between day and night generate unique weather patterns. Desert subjects—from weathered joshua trees to abstract dune formations—benefit from the clean, directional light these environments provide.
