A lone cottonwood in full fall color stands against the striped bentonite hills of Utah's Capitol Reef country. Fujifilm GFX100S, fall.

Bentonite hills in the Capitol Reef region are formed from volcanic ash that settled in ancient shallow seas and compacted into clay over millions of years. The resulting terrain is striped in bands of gray, green, and purple — colors that have nothing to do with the red sandstone everywhere else in canyon country. A cottonwood in fall color against bentonite hills creates a color relationship specific to this part of Utah: the warm yellow-gold of the leaves against the cool gray-green of the clay, with the canyon walls in the background. It doesn't look like anywhere else. Shot on the Fujifilm GFX100S at sunset in fall. Available on ImageTech Photo Gloss paper, ChromaLuxe aluminum metal prints, and Lumachrome HD TruLife acrylic. Standard sizes from 11x14 to 40x50. Limited edition, numbered, with certificate of authenticity.

About “Cottonwood and Bentonite Hill

The Image

"Cottonwood and Bentonite Hill" presents a distinctive perspective on Utah's remarkable red rock country. Technical Approach

This photograph was captured using a Medium Format Digital camera. Shot during sunset, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Autumn color transformed the landscape, adding warmth and visual richness to the natural scene.

Location & Subject

Utah's landscape represents millions of years of geological artistry. The state contains more national parks than almost any other, each showcasing distinct formations—from Zion's towering sandstone cliffs to Bryce Canyon's delicate hoodoos, from Arches' natural stone bridges to Capitol Reef's colorful waterpocket fold. The interplay of light on red rock creates conditions that reward patient photographers with extraordinary images. Desert landscapes reward photographers who understand the extremes of this environment. The absence of atmospheric moisture creates exceptional clarity and vibrant color saturation, particularly during golden hour. Heat creates convection currents requiring careful timing, while dramatic temperature swings between day and night generate unique weather patterns. Desert subjects—from weathered joshua trees to abstract dune formations—benefit from the clean, directional light these environments provide.
