The dune field near Panamint Valley is far enough off the road that most Death Valley visitors never find it. Getting there in winter, late in the day, when shadows start cutting across the sand at a low angle, requires some commitment. Shot on Ilford Delta 100 in a 4x5 camera. Black and white because the dunes are all shape and shadow. Color would have missed the point. The Panamint Range holds position in the background. The light lasted maybe twelve minutes. Available as a limited edition fine art print on ImageTech Photo Gloss paper, ChromaLuxe aluminum, or Lumachrome HD TruLife Acrylic in sizes from 11x14 to 40x50.
The dunes photograph well because the light does all the work. Early morning or late afternoon, the sun comes in low and flat across the surface and turns every ripple into a ridge, every slope into a graphic division between lit and unlit. The sand itself becomes almost irrelevant. What you're really photographing is light.
This was made in those conditions. A single curving dune ridge splits the frame diagonally, the windward face bleached nearly white, the lee side dropping into shadow dark enough to read as black. The texture of the ripples on the lower slopes is sharp enough to count the individual ridges. The upper dune face is smooth where the wind has swept it clean.
Shot on Ilford Delta 100 in a 4x5 large format camera in the at the end of the day.

Technical Approach
This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera loaded with Ilford Delta 100. Shot during sunset, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Winter stripped the landscape to its essential forms, creating stark contrast and clean compositions. Delta 100 renders smooth, continuous tones that translate beautifully from negative to fine art print. The large film area records extraordinary detail, producing prints that remain sharp at virtually any size. Camera movements allow precise control over perspective and depth of field impossible with smaller formats.
Location & Subject
California offers unparalleled variety for landscape photography. Ancient redwood forests along the coast, the granite grandeur of Yosemite, the otherworldly terrain of Death Valley, and the twisted Joshua trees of the Mojave—each ecosystem presents unique photographic challenges and rewards. The Golden State's varied geography ensures compelling subjects in every season. Desert landscapes reward photographers who understand the extremes of this environment. The absence of atmospheric moisture creates exceptional clarity and vibrant color saturation, particularly during golden hour. Heat creates convection currents requiring careful timing, while dramatic temperature swings between day and night generate unique weather patterns. Desert subjects—from weathered joshua trees to abstract dune formations—benefit from the clean, directional light these environments provide.
