Factory Butte rises from the Utah badlands under a completely overcast sky — no blue, no direct sun, just flat light and leading lines pointing toward the butte. Kodak T-Max 100, Tachihara 4x5. Black and white because the conditions called for it.

About “Desolation”
The Image
"Desolation" presents a distinctive perspective on Utah's remarkable red rock country. Most desert photography waits for clear blue sky. On this visit to Factory Butte, the sky was completely overcast — the blue entirely blocked. For color photography, that's usually a problem. For black and white, it's a different problem: the absence of sky detail means the composition has to work on structure alone. The solution was to embrace the flat light rather than fight it, and to find the leading lines in the foreground terrain that pull the eye toward Factory Butte. The butte's distinctive shape is recognizable even without the dramatic sky that most images of this location use. Shot on Kodak T-Max 100 in a Tachihara 4x5. The black and white conversion was the right call — color would have been flat and uninteresting. The overcast sky becomes a graphic element rather than a liability. Available as a limited edition fine art print on ImageTech Photo Gloss paper, ChromaLuxe aluminum, or Lumachrome HD TruLife Acrylic in sizes from 11x14 to 40x50. Numbered with certificate of authenticity.
Technical Approach
This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera loaded with Kodak T-Max 100. Shot during afternoon in cloudy conditions, the light and atmosphere shaped the character of this image. Summer light, intense and directional, demanded precise timing and careful exposure management. T-Max 100's tabular grain structure produces clean tones and sharp detail, well suited to high-contrast landscapes. The large film area records extraordinary detail, producing prints that remain sharp at virtually any size. Camera movements allow precise control over perspective and depth of field impossible with smaller formats. As will most desert locations clouds can be hard to come by. On this visit there were too many clouds, the blue sky was completely blocked out. This really changes the mood of these locations so I leaned into that with this shot. Using black and white to embrace this I found leading lines pointing to Factory Butte to help lead the eye through the image.
Location & Subject
Utah's landscape represents millions of years of geological artistry. The state contains more national parks than almost any other, each showcasing distinct formations—from Zion's towering sandstone cliffs to Bryce Canyon's delicate hoodoos, from Arches' natural stone bridges to Capitol Reef's colorful waterpocket fold. The interplay of light on red rock creates conditions that reward patient photographers with extraordinary images. Desert landscapes reward photographers who understand the extremes of this environment. The absence of atmospheric moisture creates exceptional clarity and vibrant color saturation, particularly during golden hour. Heat creates convection currents requiring careful timing, while dramatic temperature swings between day and night generate unique weather patterns. Desert subjects—from weathered joshua trees to abstract dune formations—benefit from the clean, directional light these environments provide.
