Swirling cross-bedded sandstone and its mirror image in a still desert pool — geology and reflection become nearly indistinguishable. Shot on the Fujifilm GFX100S in medium format, processed in black and white.

Sandstone and its reflection in a still desert pool, shot on the Fujifilm GFX100S in medium format, processed in black and white. The cross-bedded sandstone of the Colorado Plateau was deposited as ancient sand dunes and then lithified over millions of years. Subsequent erosion has exposed the internal structure — the diagonal lines of ancient dune faces, the curved surfaces where layers intersect. A pool of still water after rain or snowmelt doubles the image exactly. In black and white, the boundary between rock and reflection becomes uncertain. The tones read the same. The geometry mirrors itself. Which half is geological fact and which is optical phenomenon is the question the image sits with. The GFX100S at 102 megapixels captures fine detail in the sandstone surface — grain, cross-bedding angles, subtle variation between layers — and the black and white conversion holds that tonal range without compressing the mid-tones. Available as a fine art medium format print in limited edition sizes.

Technical Approach

This photograph was captured using a Medium Format Digital camera. Shot during midday, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Winter stripped the landscape to its essential forms, creating stark contrast and clean compositions.

Location & Subject

The Sonoran Desert and Colorado Plateau create one of Earth's most photographically diverse regions. Ancient geological forces carved slot canyons, towering buttes, and vast desert expanses that shift color throughout the day. From the iconic silhouettes of Monument Valley to the intricate sandstone formations of Vermilion Cliffs, Arizona offers landscape photographers endless opportunities to capture the raw beauty of the American Southwest. Desert landscapes reward photographers who understand the extremes of this environment. The absence of atmospheric moisture creates exceptional clarity and vibrant color saturation, particularly during golden hour. Heat creates convection currents requiring careful timing, while dramatic temperature swings between day and night generate unique weather patterns. Desert subjects—from weathered joshua trees to abstract dune formations—benefit from the clean, directional light these environments provide.
