A stone staircase descends into a canal in Venice at night, the water moving slowly past old foundations. The warmth of the canal lamps reflects unevenly in the surface. Nikon Z7 II.

A canal staircase in Venice at night, shot on the Nikon Z7 II. Venice at night is different from Venice in the day. The crowds thin. The ambient sound drops from constant to occasional. The light on the water comes from building windows and canal lamps — warm and uneven, casting reflections that shift with the current. This staircase descends from a small campo directly into the water, the kind of entrance that made sense before boats gave way to foot traffic. The stonework is old, worn smooth at the edges, darkened with centuries of moisture. The Nikon Z7 II handled the mixed low light without adding noise that would compete with the texture of the stone. Venice is sinking at roughly 2mm per year due to groundwater extraction and sediment compaction. The staircases that once reached the canal surface are now submerged to a different level than when they were built. Available as a fine art print in limited edition sizes.
