Wrought-iron lanterns hang from every vault of a long stone colonnade in Lisbon, the arches repeating all the way down to a single door at the far end.
This colonnade runs along one side of a square in Lisbon, and for most of the day it's full of people. Café tables, tour groups, someone selling sunglasses. I waited for a gap when the whole corridor was empty, all the way down to the door at the far end.
There was no direct sun under the arches, just light bouncing in off the stone outside. It turned the vaulted ceilings into long, soft steps of gray, and the polished floor picked up a faint reflection of every column. The lanterns were the only dark shapes in the whole scene.
Count the arches and you lose track pretty quickly. Each one frames the next, the lanterns shrink into the distance, and the dark diamonds in the floor point straight down the middle. Black and white felt right for it. Without color it's just rhythm and stone.

About “Lisbon Colonnade”
The Image
"Lisbon Colonnade" reveals the extraordinary beauty found in unexpected moments. This colonnade runs along one side of a square in Lisbon, and for most of the day it's full of people. Café tables, tour groups, someone selling sunglasses. I waited for a gap when the whole corridor was empty, all the way down to the door at the far end.

Technical Approach
This photograph was captured using a Medium Format Digital camera. Shot during morning, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Summer light, intense and directional, demanded precise timing and careful exposure management.
Location & Subject
The American landscape offers endless variety for the patient photographer. Understanding how light, weather, and season interact with terrain allows meaningful interpretation of natural scenes. Each location presents unique challenges and rewards, requiring technical skill and artistic vision to translate three-dimensional experience into compelling two-dimensional photographs. Black and white photography distills landscapes to their essential elements—form, texture, light, and shadow. Without color to guide the eye, tonal relationships become paramount. Zone System techniques, developed by Ansel Adams for large format film, provide systematic control over these relationships from exposure through printing. The resulting images possess a timeless quality that color photography rarely achieves.
